Change default folder programs install to.

"Install software to a folder of your choice."

This registry tweak allows you to change the default folder that software is installed to, to a path and folder of your choosing.

Note: The default folder that software installs to is C:\Program Files.

Caution:
Incorrectly editing the registry may render your system inoperable - requiring the re-installation of Windows.

Editing the Registry:

  1. Open the Registry Editor (RegEdit.exe).

  2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to:

    Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion

  3. Right-click on ProgramFilesDir in right pane of RegEdit and select Modify from drop-down menu.

  4. In the Edit String dialog box enter the full path and folder to the new installation folder into the "Value Data" section.

  5. Click OK button.

  6. Exit the Registry Editor (RegEdit.exe).

The change to the registry is reflected the next time the system is rebooted.

Restoring the Registry Setting:

To return the setting back to its default, open RegEdit and open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to:

Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion

Change the value of ProgramFilesDir back to C:\Program Files and reboot the system.
