Increase number of network redirector buffers.

"Increase the network performance of Windows."

This registry tweak will allow you to increase the number of network redirector buffers that Windows uses - which may help increase network performance.

Caution:
Incorrectly editing the registry may render your system inoperable - requiring the re-installation of Windows.

Editing the Registry:

  1. Open the Registry Editor (RegEdit.exe).

  2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to:

    System \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ LanmanWorkstation \ Parameters

  3. In the right pane of RegEdit, right-click on MaxCmds and select Modify from the drop-down menu.

    Note: If MaxCmds does not exist:

    • Create it by right-clicking in the right pane of the registry editor and select New\DWORD Value from the drop-down menu.

    • Rename New Value #1 that is created to MaxCmds and press enter - then follow the instruction given above in step 3.

  4. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box enter the value of 45 in the "Value Data" section.

  5. In the right pane of RegEdit, right-click on MaxThreads and select Modify from the drop-down menu.

    Note: If MaxThreads does not exist:

    • Create it by right-clicking in the right pane of the registry editor and select New\DWORD Value from the drop-down menu.

    • Rename New Value #1 that is created to MaxThreads and press enter - then follow the instruction given above in step 5.

  6. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box enter the value of 45 in the "Value Data" section.

  7. Click OK button.

  8. Exit the Registry Editor (RegEdit.exe).

The change to the registry is reflected the next time the system is rebooted.

Notes:

1. Ensure that the values of both MaxCmds and MaxThreads are set to the same value.

2. The value of both MaxCmds and MaxThreads can range from 0 to 255. A value of 45 is provided as an example, increasing or decreasing the value of MaxCmds and MaxThreads within the given range of 0 to 255 may provide further performance enhancements.

Restoring the Registry Setting:

To return the Start menu to its default, open RegEdit and open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to:

System \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ LanmanWorkstation \ Parameters

Change the MaxCmds and MaxThreads values to: 15 and reboot the system.
