"View hidden details about installed devices in Windows XP."

This registry tweak allows you to view a lot of hidden information about devices installed in Windows XP.

Caution:
Incorrectly editing the registry may render your system inoperable - requiring the re-installation of Windows.

Editing the Registry:

  1. Open the Registry Editor (RegEdit.exe).

  2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to:

    CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Session Manager \ Environment

  3. In the right pane of RegEdit, right-click on DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS and select Modify from the drop-down menu.

    Note: If DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS does not exist:

    • Create it by right-clicking in the right pane of the registry editor and select New\String Value from the drop-down menu.

    • Rename New Value #1 that is created to DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS and press enter - then follow the instruction given above in step 3.

  4. In the Edit String dialog box enter the following value into the "Value Data" section:

  5. Click OK button.

  6. Exit the Registry Editor (RegEdit.exe).

To view the hidden information about installed devices, right-click on any device listed in the Device Manager and select properties from the drop-down menu.

The device properties dialog will now contain a "Details" tab revealing a host of previously hidden information covering:

  • Device Instance ID
  • Hardware IDs
  • Compatible IDs
  • Matching Device ID
  • Service
  • Enumerator
  • Capabilities
  • Devnode Flags
  • Config Flags
  • CSConfig Flags
  • Ejection Relations
  • Removal Relations
  • Bus Relations
  • Device Upper Filters
  • Device Lower Filters
  • Class Upper Filters
  • Class Lower Filters
  • Class Installer
  • Class Coinstallers
  • Device Coinstallers
  • Firmware Revision
  • Current Power State
  • Power Capabilities
  • Power State Mappings

Restoring the Registry Setting:

To turn off the "Details" tab, open RegEdit and open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to:

CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Session Manager \ Environment

Change the DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS value to: 0
